April
15, 1912: At around 12:45 a.m., the first lifeboat is lowered into the
freezing water and the first distress rocket is fired. Lifeboats
continue to be launched, mostly only half full. The last lifeboat is
lowered into the Atlantic a little after 2 a.m.
More than 1,500 people
are still on the TITANIC, now sitting at a steep tilt. At 2:18 a.m., the
last radio message is sent and the TITANIC snaps in half. By 2:20 a.m.,
she has sunk beneath the icy waters of the Atlantic.
