Fun Facts

Fun Facts about Reindeer and Caribou

Reindeer and caribou are the same animal (Rangifer tarandus) and are a member of the deer family. In Europe, they are called reindeer. In North America, the animals are called caribou if they are wild and reindeer if they are domesticated.

  • Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, while in most other deer species, only the males have antlers. Compared to their body size, reindeer have the largest and heaviest antlers of all living deer species. A male’s antlers can be up to 51 inches long, and a female’s antlers can reach 20 inches.
  • Unlike horns, antlers fall off and grow back larger each year. Male reindeer begin to grow antlers in February and female reindeer in May. Both sexes finish growing their antlers at the same time but shed them at different times of the year. Males drop their antlers in November, leaving them without antlers until the following spring, while females keep their antlers through the winter until their calves are born in May.
  • Reindeer are covered in hair from their nose to the bottom of their feet (hooves). The hairy hooves may look funny, but they give reindeer a good grip when walking on frozen ground, ice, mud, and snow.
  • Reindeer are the only deer species to have hair completely covering their nose. Their specialized nose helps to warm incoming cold air before it enters their lungs, and it’s also an excellent sniffer. Their good sense of smell helps the reindeer find food hidden under snow, locate danger, and recognize direction. Reindeer mainly travel into the wind so they can pick up scents.
  • Reindeer eat mosses, herbs, ferns, grasses, and the shoots and leaves of shrubs and trees, especially willow and birch. In winter, they make do with lichen (also called reindeer moss) and fungi, scraping the snow away with their hooves to get it. An average adult reindeer eats 9 to 18 pounds of vegetation a day.
  • Reindeer travel, feed, and rest together throughout the day in herds of 10 to a few hundred. In spring, they may form super-herds of 50,000 to 500,000 animals. The herds generally follow food sources, traveling south up to 1,000 miles when food is hard to find in winter.
  • Reindeer are the only deer species to be widely domesticated. They are used as beasts of burden and farmed for their milk, meat, and hides.
  • The antiparasitic drug ivermectin is FDA-approved to treat and control warbles in reindeer. Warbles is a parasitic infection caused by the reindeer warble fly. The fly’s larvae can penetrate the reindeers’ skin, causing harm to the milk, meat, and hides of domesticated herds. The larvae can also cause disease in people.
  • Santa’s reindeer were first mentioned in 1821 when New York printer William Gilley published a 16-page booklet titled A New Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve, Part III by an anonymous author:

    Old Santeclaus with much delight
His reindeer drives this frosty night.
O'er chimneytops, and tracks of snow,
To bring his yearly gifts to you.

Two years later, in 1823, the Troy Sentinel published the poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, commonly known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. The poem featured eight flying reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh, and for the first time, they are identified by name. (Quiz Question 1: Can you name all eight of Santa’s reindeer?)

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer began guiding Santa’s sleigh in 1939, when Robert L. May wrote the story of “the most famous reindeer of all” as a Christmas coloring book for his employer, the department store Montgomery Ward. The company gave away the coloring books as holiday gifts to children to entice their parents to visit and shop at the store. (Quiz Question 2: What two names did May consider for his red-nosed reindeer before settling on Rudolph?)

In 1948, May’s brother-in-law Johnny Marks made the story into a song. It was featured in a cartoon shown in movie theaters, but wasn’t released as a stand-alone recording until 1949 when “The Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry recorded the song and its popularity soared. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is one of the biggest-selling Christmas songs of all time. (Quiz Question 3: Is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer a male or female?)

    Answers
  • Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
  • Rollo and Reginald.
  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer must be a female to have those antlers on Christmas Eve!

Sunday Blessings - Happy 1st Advent Sunday!

“Advent” means the arrival of a notable person or event, and in the four weeks before Christmas, we remember how Christ has come to save us.

The Advent season is a four week period before Christmas that celebrates the anticipation and coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The origin of "advent" is from the Latin word adventus which simply translates "coming" or "arrival". Not only is the Christian meaning for preparation and celebration of the coming of Jesus Christ, his birth at Christmas, but also to celebrate the new life when someone accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, and lastly, the anticipation of Jesus returning again.

Services this morning were beautiful and the hymns uplifting.

O COME, O COME, EMMANUEL Red Trinity Hymnal #194

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appears.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
Oh, come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads to Thee,
And close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
O, come, Desire of Nations, bind,
All peoples in one heart and mind,
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Pet City 2 - another game

I play quite a few games on both PC and console, but one game that I play can only be played on mobile or through Facebook, and that is Pet City 2 by Catalyst Apps. I only play the desktop version through Facebook and I have been playing this game since 2014 with my daughter. It was Pet City back then but with the phase out of flash player, the game had to be re-coded and ported to the unity platform, and is now Pet City 2, or PC2.

PC2 is a virtual pet game where you create a little pet (or person like many do) and can dress them up and design cute little rooms in different themes for them. Every week there is a new banner item and new room feature available. There are ways in the game to earn coins and GC (green cash) which is used in the game to purchase items for your virtual pet. There are also blue tickets you can earn by completing certain collections. Your pet also has a playmate that can be activated as well. As with most games these days, if you want the best items, the use of real money is a must, unless you want to try out trade groups, which is just as bad as the current inflation we are experiencing in the real world. πŸ˜‚ I will use real money first before I join trade groups. Below are some pics of my virtual pets, Jindi and Jay. Currently my little house (rooms) are decorated for Thanksgiving. These are just the rooms of my little house that I have designed for my pets.

Friday 5

LOL! I have been off work since Thursday and my days are getting mixed up. My first Friday Five in a while.

Friday Five - Don't Touch that Dial

1. What was the most recent physical book you purchased and/or read? Actually last Christmas. We bought a MINECRAFT cookcook for the kiddos. Well actually, it's for all of us. 😁

2. What was the last compact disc you listened to? Goodness, I have no idea! I usually listen to all my music these days on Spotify or Prime Music.

3. What did you last watch on DVD? That one I remember. Renaissance Man.

4. Whom did you last speak to on a landline? The only "landline" phone I use these days is when I work the front desk at work. So, Monday December 21st.

5. What did you last purchase with cash? Last Wednesday when I pitched in some cash for a pizza party at work for my unit.

Happy Thanksgiving/Thankful Thursday

It’s Thankful Thursday hosted by Brian of Brian’s Home. He wants us to post what we’re thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving! Today we got together with family that we have not seen in a few years. Great food and nice conversation. I am thankful for being able to spend time missed. My son didn't make it as he is not feeling well.

Throwback Thursday

I can't believe it's been 13 years since I worked for the Humane Society of North Texas. Wow! And 13 years ago this big guy joined our family after I fostered him for a couple of months.

His name was Hoss. His owner had abandoned him at our shelter because he was heart-worm positive. I am thankful my family was able to provide a loving home for this wonderful dog and he remained with us until he crossed Rainbow Bridge. Even though he had gone through heart-worm treatment, his heart was weak and he succumbed to cardiac arrest 11 months afterwards. He was such a big baby and a great dog.

Farewell Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

His career has spanned decades, and his music is truly iconic. Legendary musician Elton John teamed up with ROBLOX to create a visionary mini concert/gaming experience and it was stunning! Five of his songs play alongside mini-games, with special in game items that you could purchase with the yellow bricks collected.  My favorite song is I'm Still Standing!

Last night, I stayed up streaming the final concert that Elton John held at Dodger Stadium (thanks to Disney+), where he first performed all those decades ago in October 1975. It was absolute perfection!!! Just absolutely amazing!!! 😊

Tragedy in the sky

😞 Tragedy in the air at the Wings Over Dallas Air Show. Prayers for the crew and all the families, as well as everyone who witnessed this tragic event. A B-17 Flying Fortress and a P-63 King Cobra collide in midair during the show and is caught on video. The pilots of these two vintage aircraft have been flying for years and as part of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), usually retired military or civilian pilots.

To Those Who Served...

Happy Veteran's Day! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ   Thank you for your service to our country.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including THEIR LIFE."

A collage of some of my military pics during Army BCT and when my husband and I served in the Texas State Guard.

Calling - ring, ring

When your supervisor calls you on your personal phone because she doesn't know if you will answer your work phone after hours. πŸ˜‚

She is on call and received a call from Statewide. Apparently our program for the on call schedule must have glitched my 4pm to 8am shift for today, which left no worker to receive other priority cases going into the holiday tomorrow. I had to boot up my work computer and fix it. Hopefully with the holiday weekend, my workers won't be swamped with cases. I am routing next week but after the week my workers, I am not holding my breath. Man. 😜

I would have answered my work phone. LOL.

Church today

Today was a very special day of celebrating, not only Jesus, but the church I attend online celebrated 30 years!! 😊 This church was founded 30 years ago. Wow!

Happy Birthday Fort Worth Presbyterian Church!! πŸŽ‚

The services are always wonderful. And I enjoy the hymns that are sung and the scripture! Pastor Eggar is a blessing!!

I want to mention something about the spirituality debate. You don't believe in God? Fine, I'm not one to judge because I'm not the judge. Why is it so important for some to mock those of us that do? If we're wrong, what have we lost when we die? Nothing! How does our believing in Jesus bring any harm? You think it makes me stupid? Gullible? Okay. But how does that affect you? I would rather live my life believing in God, and serving Him, and find out I was right, than not believing in Him and not serve Him, and find out I was wrong. Then it's too late. There's no shame in my game! I believe in Jesus Christ. He said deny me in front of your friends & I will deny you in front of my Father (Matthew 10:33-35).

HE'S COMING BACK ... the Greatest man in history, had no servants, yet they called him Master. Had no degree, yet they called him Teacher. Had no medicines, yet they called him Healer. He had no army, yet kings feared Him. He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world. He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today. His name is Jesus.

I am a believer of Jesus Chris. Thank you Jesus for all you've given me. I love you and accept you!

Stay Blessed! πŸ’—

Back to Blogger ...

I woke up this morning with the sole purpose or transferring my posts from my website blog back to Blogger. And I began before my church services and finished up afterwards. Yes, it is easier here and so is the commenting system. I am sure you will agree.

So, with that said, hopefully I will be posting more. Who knows! LOL! I am not the most proficient at blogging. Working full time and trying to get this house cleaned and organized has been keeping me in a world of chaos. Now do you understand why I named my website what I did? πŸ˜…
