Tears today

I was devastated to learn of a friend's unexpected and sudden passing from his dad today. 😔 He lived in Ramsey, Isle of Man and was only 43 years old. So young! It's been over twenty years since I signed up to be a member of a Titanic site that would lead me to a group of people, mostly across the pond, that shared my interest in the RMS Titanic. We would all hit the forums and post daily. There was a specific area called Cafe Parisien that was for the TT community and this is where we became friends. To name a few - Andy (moderator), Rose, Jo, Clayton, Matthew, Lynnet, Steven, Braniff, Hafizia, and I am sure there were a few others. So many years ago!!! So many memories. We lost Steven several years ago. My husband and I had planned a meet up to go eat lunch one weekend. It was to be us, Steven and Braniff. We were going to meet at Bennigan's. Then news comes to us that Steven had been in a car accident and didn't make it. We never got to meet for lunch. The site is no longer and Andy went on to do other things. A few of us managed to reconnect via Facebook and have kept in contact since.

Needless to say, the things I thought I was going to get done today didn't get done. My heart has been heavy. Matthew and I were messaging back and forth after the Texas Rangers won the World Series. That was an awesome day. We messaged after Christmas and he was sharing his statistics for rugby.  When the Dallas Cowboys lost, he immediately started in with the crazy memes. LOL! He was so smart and funny. Autism was something that Matthew and my daughter had in common and he was amazing with stats!!! I am going to miss his messages.

 

 

It's hard to process. I have so many people that I have met online through the years that I call friends. Probably more so than in real life, actually. Prayers and condolences to my friend's family in this time of need. May God keep you all and comfort you. 💗

 

Titan found...

This week has me numb and heartbroken. Not just work related, but because of Titan. Everyone who knows me, knows that I have always had a fascination for the RMS Titanic and the history that surrounds her. Heck, I love ships in general!! I have followed most of the dives, have watched numerous documentaries and listened to Paul-Henry (P.H.), Bob Ballard, J.C., and many others, speak about this ocean liner for decades. 😐

I probably slept about three hours last night, and then my husband texted me to tell me that Victor had arrived on scene to deploy, and then I couldn't sleep at all. Time had run out. Even with Victor headed down to the wreck, there was no way he would have been able to get FADOSS attached and ready for pull up. And then we find out that one of the ROV's found a debris field. My heart just sank because that could only mean one thing. 😔 The RMS Titanic wreck has claimed more souls and the irony is not lost on me. When is mankind going to learn? The warnings were there then, and the warnings were here now - and yet look where we are. I pray for the families and the many friends and followers out there. And I pray for Wendy, who is the great-great-granddaughter of the Strauss'. The blessing is that death was instantaneous. 

Titan

I have been following the submersible, The Titan, for the last couple of days now and my heart is heavy. I knew OceanGate was going to launch a dive this year, but they had listed no dates when I had checked last, only that they were doing one dive because of weather. 

An hour and a half into the dive, all communication was lost. If I'm not mistaken, it takes almost two hours to reach the wreck of Titanic. These dives are normally 8 hours. My heart is heavy. Paul-Henri is considered a renowned Titanic naval captain and historian with numerous dives to the wreck. Prayers for all of them.  Praying for all five aboard.

 

 

Carpathia arrives

 

111 years ago

On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic began its maiden voyage, leaving Southampton, England. Four days into her journey, the luxury liner sank just hours after colliding with an iceberg. Over 1500 souls were lost this fateful night, and the TITANIC remains one of the worst maritime disasters.

TITANIC has always been my favorite ocean liner and when James Cameron's movie hit theaters in 1997, it catapulted Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio, as well as this ship to fame, bringing her back from the depths of the ocean, never to be forgotten. I made a tribute to this beautiful ocean liner on my website a few years ago aptly titled - Leaving Port. Of course, JC's movie is depicted because it also became one of my favorite movies, not just about the ship, but the story of Jack and Rose as well. I am a sucker for a good romance. LOL

As a MINECRAFT player, I was ecstatic when I came across this build by ChronosDarth. He did a fantastic job recreating this ship in MINECRAFT.

 

Titanic finally found

On this day - 37 years ago - my favorite ocean liner was found! 🤩 In 1985, a US-French expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, located the wreckage of the Titanic on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 400 miles off Newfoundland.

My fave movie dissed! Nooo!

This post was shared to one of my book groups on Facebook and I about lost my coffee this morning. My dear Brandon, you my dude - have missed out on the entirety of what this movie was about!!!! 😂

James’s Cameron’s TITANIC is one of my absolute favorite movies, and not just for this love story, but because the Ship of Dreams has extremely fascinated me since I was a little girl. When the movie first starts, we encounter the remnants of the sunken ship and about why it is being explored. We have a guy named Lovett looking for this beautiful diamond necklace that is called The Heart of the Ocean. They find a portfolio that contains a picture of a young woman wearing the necklace. Flashback to Titanic’s maiden voyage and we meet both Jack and Rose. Jack is excited that he won his ticket to board Titanic in a lucky game of poker and eager to return to America. “Somebody’s life’s about to change”. Rose feels a sense of doom as she is boarding Titanic that will eventually take her back to Philadelphia to marry a man she doesn’t even like. “It was the ship of dreams to everyone else. To me, it was a slave ship, taking me back to America in chains. Outwardly, I was everything a well brought up girl should be. Inside, I was screaming.”

It all becomes too much one night after dinner and we watch Rose running across the ship to the stern, where Jack finds her - standing on the other side of the railing about to jump. Jack talks to her about his life in Wisconsin and ultimately, talks her out of jumping off the back of the ship. In the days following, we see the two of them together talking about life and discussing their hopes and ambitions. Rose can open up to Jack and talk about her deepest fears, dreams, basically anything that she cannot share with her family. Yes, it develops into a love story. Rose tells Jack that she will depart the ship with him when they dock in New York. Two young lovers making plans to defy society. But it is not to be. As we all know, the Titanic hits an ice-berg in the middle of the Atlantic and sinks. Rose survives, and Jack does not. Yes, they both could have fit on the door, but it’s a story without that happy ending. Jack makes Rose promise she will go on and live her life, and she does.

Rose eventually marries another man and has three children. We are not told in the movie if it was a marriage of convenience, but I often think it was because Rose never let go of Jack, and the heaven scene proves that. Towards the end of the movie, we flashback to a scene aboard the Carpathia as Rose realizes the necklace is in the pocket of a coat her fiance Cal had put on her, then back to present day as Rose is again at the stern of the Keldysh; she tosses the necklace into the ocean. As Rose is sleeping in her bed that night, the camera pans around the room and we see the pictures that Rose had mentioned when the movie first started. “That’s nice. I have to have my pictures when I travel.” I know that in every picture, Rose is by herself. Rose riding a horse on the beach with a roller coaster in the background. A few pictures of her as an actress. A picture with an elephant. These are all pictures of her achieving dreams of what she and Jack talked about doing together. The movie pushes us back to the wreckage of Titanic, where she materializes into the beautiful Ship of Dreams and the camera leads us down the promenade deck towards the Grand Staircase where Jack is waiting.

Rose tossed the necklace into the ocean as a reminder of her experience on Titanic, and she had finally let go.

The Carpathia...

April 15, 1912: The Carpathia, was about 58 miles southeast of the Titanic at the time it heard the distress call. She doesn't pick up the first of the survivors until around 4:10 a.m. Finally, hours later after picking up survivors from the last lifeboat, she heads for New York at 8:50 a.m.

The Mackay-Bennett is the first of several ships to travel to the area where the Titanic sank to search for bodies. On April 18, 1912, the Carpathia arrives in New York with 705 survivors.

April 15, 1912: At around 12:45 a.m., the first lifeboat is lowered into the freezing water and the first distress rocket is fired. Lifeboats continue to be launched, mostly only half full. The last lifeboat is lowered into the Atlantic a little after 2 a.m.

More than 1,500 people are still on the TITANIC, now sitting at a steep tilt. At 2:18 a.m., the last radio message is sent and the TITANIC snaps in half. By 2:20 a.m., she has sunk beneath the icy waters of the Atlantic.

TITANIC's final hours...

April 14, 1912: At 11:40 p.m., two hours after the last warning, ship lookout Frederick Fleet spots an iceberg directly in the path of the Titanic. First Officer Murdoch orders a hard starboard (left) turn, but the Titanic's right side scrapes the iceberg.

Ten minutes later, water has entered the front part of the ship and risen to a level of 14 feet. Captain Smith learns the ship can only stay afloat for two hours and gives orders to make first radio calls for help. He orders the crew to prepare the lifeboats and start getting the passengers and crew up on deck. There is only room in the lifeboats for about half the passengers and crew onboard. Women and children first.

Nothing but stars...

April 14, 1912: The temperature has dropped to 32 degrees F and Titanic is traveling at 22.5 knots. The sea is calm, the skies are perfectly clear, and the stars appear as brilliant points of light, but no moon. Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee take over lookout duty in the crow's nest. Interestingly, they did not have binoculars.

Captain Smith retires to his room...

April 14, 1912: Captain Smith retires to his room around 9:20 p.m. The last of seven warnings regarding icebergs is received around 9:40 p.m. in the wireless room. This warning never makes it to the bridge.

April 14, 1912: Captain Smith cancels the lifeboat drills for the morning. As several iceberg warnings are received throughout the day. Captain Smith changes the Titanic's course, heading slightly south. Titanic's speed is not lowered.

April 13, 1912: The weather is good and the sea is calm. The temps are getting colder. The Titanic receives several wireless messages from other ships reporting ice.

TITANIC leaves Queenstown

April 11, 1912 - The TITANIC leaves Queenstown (with a few more passengers and mail) at 1:30 pm, and begins her journey across the Atlantic Ocean headed for New York.
