The month of April used to be known as Autism Awareness month but now we are calling it Autism Acceptance. Why the shift?
It's a simple – but important – revision. I don't think I could have said it any better than Christopher Banks, the president and CEO of The Autism Society of America.
"Awareness is knowing that somebody has autism. Acceptance
is when you include (a person with autism) in your activities. Help
(them) to develop in that community and get that sense of connection to
other people."
Today, April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day, a day to celebrate the lives of
people with autism and show our support for their needs. This day was
established in 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly as an
international observance to encourage member states to take measures
that promote better understanding and acceptance of those living with
autism spectrum disorder.
That does make a lot of sense.
ReplyDeleteUnder the skin, we are all the same. It is so good neurodiversity is in the fore right now in literature and the media. It is also so good that there are policies in place to help people be assessed and to get the right assistance they need.
